Night Trek at Velliangiri

Hey guys... welcome back...to my next post... this is the first time i am writing abt my trip experiences... rather tough trek experience... :) .. happy to inform you guys that m part of Chennai Trekking Club (CTC) now.. :) so... looking forward for some great treks with this group..... This trek was planned as part of Shivarathri by my cousin who is a professional trekker.. his name is Aravind who lives in Chennai... Velliangiri is situated in Poondi around 1hr journey from Coimbatore.. its a shiva temple.. and there are 7 hills to climb... to reach the hill top where you will find a suyambu lingam (Naturally formed lingam)... so my cousin and his team of trekkers planned to arrive to coimbatore on friday 12th afternoon.... and I left bangalore on thursday night and reached coimbatore on friday 12th morning and waited for my cousin to arrive.... and we all had lunch... and left coimbatore at around 5:30 PM.. and reached Poondi only by 8:15 PM.. bec of heavy rush in all the buses...

We started the trek at 8:30 PM... with each of us having one bamboo stick and a torch as it was a night trek... since without the sticks you cannot cross all the 7 hills... we were 9 of us...our first target was to cross the 1500 steps of the 1st hill.. and then take rest.. to have our dinner...we took around 5 to 7 breaks in between the 1st 1500 steps... and finally completed the 1st hill... and we sat down for dinner...and lime soda... :) we finished by 10 PM.. and continued our trek... there were another 2500 steps for the 2nd and 3rd hill to complete... we started off very nicely after the dinner... and crossed 2500 steps... with around 10 breaks.. :) .. then the hills became steeper... we had to cross for abt and hr...to reach the 5th hill... then we came across a coffee shop.... we had sukhu kapi (coffee with ginger)... and there was this naturally formed water area... where few of my friends took bath...the water was ice cold.. :) .. by this time.. few of our torch's battery had drained.. :) we managed to trek in groups... and we reached the 6th hill... this is where we cud see the clouds... it was awesome.. and the climate was very very cold.. mist all over... 7th hill was amazing.. bec it was steep like a vertical ladder... we had all our energy drained by this time... we reached the 7th hill at around 3 AM... it normally takes 4 hrs for a professional trekker to cross all 7 hills... we took 6 1/2 hrs.. :) we reached the top... had a good darshan of Lord Shiva... it was amazing to be above the clouds....and we wanted to watch the sunrise... and i guess the temperature was 0 degrees at the top... our hair and legs were covered with ice crystals... it was mist all over... somehow we waited in the 7th hill..from 3 AM till 7:00 for the sunrise.. :) finally we had a very beautiful view... of the sunrise... and started to come down... getting down was comparatively easy... we reached the bottom of the hill by 11:30 AM... it took us around 4 hrs.. :) it was a life time experience... i enjoyed to the core...

Things we carried/essential things to carry:
1) Torch light and extra batteries - since it was a night trek
2) Eatables (we carried chappathi's and gravy) - bec u dont get anything up in the hill.. except sukhu kapi (coffee with ginger) and lemon soda
3) 1 towel - because there is a naturally formed water area (sonai) where we took bath..
4) Shawl/jerkins - because its too cold up there in the 7th hill... :)
5) 1 bamboo stick - you can buy this at the bottom for Rs.15/-
6) Shoes/floaters - You need to have this in a carry bag, and walk with barefoot till the 1st hill is complete, then later on you can wear your shoes.. trust me.. the amount of time will reduce gradually if you wear shoes..
7) Carry some cash... for coffee and lemon soda
8) Water bottles
9) Bag to carry all the above stuffs :)

Objective: To complete the trek all the way upto 7th hill and watch the sunrise and get down

Status: Completed with great difficulty :)

Experience: Life time experience

Difficulty level: Tough

The trek will test your self confidence... its a must go trek for all trekkers... :)

  3. Once you get warmed up after the 1st hill you will find it okay to walk on bare foot. Don't ware heavy tea shirts on the 1st mountain as it sweats a lot while you get warmed up. as you go on and on you will get used to it.

  4. you will be able to find water spots (sunai) in four areas only thus try to preserve water.. drink less... 1st on mid of valluku parai (2nd hill), 2nd on the 3rd hill, 3rd on the fourth and 4th on the end of 5th hill ( aandi sunai).
Even though one will find the water ice cold its advisable to take bath in it. it will refresh a lot and has lot of medicinal properties.
warning... don't get too deep into the aandi sunai as there may be leaches... at the border of the pond its safer to take bath.

use scarf on the head during the 6th and 7th hill as the chill wind on the head and ears may cause cold...

try to sit on the 7th hill after the darshan and relax... meditate is best... the divine feeling one wont be able to get anywhere else.

There used to be a yogi/sidha who plays flute during sunrise... its heavenly... I had the chance of hearing it twice...

while climbing make sure u keep sure-foot so that one don't trip and cramp the leg.
advisable to carry one or two sprain tablets and muscle cramp tablets for new trekkers..

  5. on the 4th and 5th hill keep to the right... left is bit dangerous... if you caught in the rain please please please please stop proceeding and let the rain stop and the water drain.. its highly dangerous to go in rain due to heavy slippery nature..

if caught heavy mist.. some time one wont be able to see two foot befor... keep to the right and stop until the mist drifts away...
